  • Aboul Gheit visits Lebanon to congratulate President Aoun

    Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, visited Lebanon on 13 January to congratulate His Excellency President General Joseph Aoun on assuming the presidency. He conveyed his best wishes for success in leading Lebanon into a new era of hope, commending the widespread trust, competence, and patriotism that President Aoun embodies.

    Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that during the meeting with the newly elected president, Mr. Aboul Gheit praised the inaugural speech delivered before Parliament. He described it as a promising foundation for the new phase that Lebanon and its people deserve after enduring prolonged suffering and crises.

    The spokesman further noted that Mr. Aboul Gheit also held meetings with President Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati. During their discussions, the Secretary-General emphasised the critical opportunity Lebanon has to initiate a fresh chapter, revitalising the country's institutions, restoring public trust in the ruling elite, and reinforcing the principles of state sovereignty. He stressed the necessity of leveraging this momentum to rebuild Lebanon’s institutions and activate their role effectively.

    Additionally, the Secretary-General underscored the urgency of forming a new government capable of addressing the pressing demands of the people. He highlighted the importance of steering Lebanon towards recovery, insulating it from external conflicts, and fostering robust relations with its Arab neighbours based on mutual respect and sound foundations.

    Roshdy affirmed that the League of Arab States remains committed to supporting Lebanon and its people. He expressed the League’s readiness to collaborate with the country’s new leadership in all efforts aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s sovereignty, achieving security and stability, and ensuring a path to recovery for its citizens.
