Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated in the meetings hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on 12 January focusing on Syria. The meetings were attended by a number of Arab foreign ministers, including Syria's new foreign minister, as well as ministers and officials from various foreign countries and international and regional organisations.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that the discussions centred on the situation in Syria and how to support the country as it navigates a challenging transition towards a new phase. This phase is marked by significant challenges, with the goal of fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people following years of hardship.
The spokesman stated that the meetings underscored the necessity of a safe and inclusive transitional process, one that reflects the interests of all Syrians, while safeguarding Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and its rich, diverse identity.
He further noted that the meetings were characterised by open and candid dialogues, reflecting a collective and genuine commitment from all parties to ensure that Syria emerges as a constructive member of the Arab and regional community.
