  • Sea-based aid delivery cannot replace land crossings: Aboul Gheit upon receiving Cyprus Foreign Minister
    Date: 05/06/2024

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed Mr. Konstantinos Kompos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, at the General Secretariat headquarters on 5 June.

Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that the discussions focused on recent developments, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip. The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Cyprus' historical support of Palestinian rights and its significant contributions to delivering aid to Gaza by sea.

The spokesman noted that both parties agreed that sea-based aid delivery cannot replace land crossings, which are essential for providing support and assistance to civilians in Gaza. They emphasised the need for the occupying force to allow aid entry through a sustainable mechanism to alleviate the worsening humanitarian crisis.

The spokesman stated that the Secretary-General emphasised the urgency of an immediate ceasefire to begin extensive relief efforts for the people of Gaza, who are on the brink of famine. Mr. Aboul Gheit discussed with the Cypriot Minister the joint Arab-European efforts to activate the two-state solution and initiate an irreversible process towards establishing a Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders. He stressed that the current crisis has unequivocally demonstrated the impossibility of maintaining the status quo and the necessity of ending the occupation as the only path to achieving security and peace for all in the region. He added that Arabs and Europeans share the responsibility to defend and actively implement the two-state solution.
