  • The Council of Arab Transport Ministers

    The Council endeavours to foster Arab collaboration across assorted domains of the transportation sector, with a particular focus on the ensuing realms:

    - Devising an Arab strategic blueprint for diverse transportation sectors, encompassing schemes and initiatives that seek to streamline transportation conundrums among its regions, in partnership and collaboration with specialised Arab organisations and Arab federations, as centers of expertise in the sector.

    - Working on the development, improvement, and organisation of the land, sea, and air transportation network between Arab countries, enhancing its technical efficiency, expanding its activities base, promoting communication, facilitating the movement of production elements and goods, and reducing transportation costs.

    - Providing recommendations to the Economic and Social Council on the implementation of the objectives of the Joint Arab Economic Action Strategy in the transportation sector, developing and coordinating cooperation with other sectors, to serve the goals of development plans and integration.

    - Proposing means of coordination between the necessary industries for the equipment and tools of this sector, meeting its needs and requirements for integration with other sectors, in cooperation with relevant Arab organisations and federations.

    - Encouraging scientific research and applied studies for the development of this sector, including statistics and information, and working on exchanging them.

    - Working on unifying legislation, regulations, and terminologies related to transportation affairs.

    - Striving to stimulate and encourage national industry for transportation facilities, including roads, railways, ports, and airports, conducting studies related to these projects, and giving priority in the study and implementation to Arab companies.

     

    The Transport Department is responsible for the tasks of the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Transport Ministers.

    The Technical Secretariat of the Council of the Arab Ministers of Transport, receives and reviews the topics to be examined from various entities, including Arab countries, as well as direct assignments from the Council and its Executive Office, and through organisations and associations related to the Arab transport sector, such as:

    • Arab Economic Unity Council
    • Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport
    • Arab Civil Aviation Authority
    • Arab Union of Land Transport
    • Arab Union of Railways
    • Arab Air Carriers Organisation
    • Arab Federation of Marine Carriers
    • Arab Federation of Seaports
    • Arab Federation of Maritime Chambers
    • Arab Federation of Freight Forwarders and Logistics

    The Technical Secretariat of the Council of the Arab Ministers of Transport cooperates with international and regional organisations and unions regarding issues that need to be presented to the Council of the Arab Ministers of Transport, which include the following:

    • International Maritime Organisation (IMO)
    • International Road Transport Union (IRU)
    • Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)
    • Union for the Mediterranean (in the field of maritime transport) (UfM)

    Technical committees are formed by the Council to follow up on relevant issues, including:

    • Technical Committee for Maritime Transport
    • Technical Committee for Multimodal Transport
    • Technical Committee for Land Transport (Road and Rail)

    The technical committees for transport comprise representatives from the member states. Representatives from Arab organisations and unions operating in the land transport sector also attend their meetings as observers.
