Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, held a meeting with Ms. Diana Mondino, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, on 26 September on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised the significance the League of Arab States places on its longstanding relations with Argentina and the Arab-Argentine friendship, which has consistently been founded on mutual support for just causes. He expressed appreciation for Argentina's historical stances in support of the Palestinian cause. However, Mr. Aboul Gheit also conveyed the League's regret over certain recent positions adopted by Argentina, which have been deemed unacceptable by Arab states, particularly regarding the issue of Jerusalem. He highlighted the exceptional sensitivity surrounding any discussions or actions related to Jerusalem, given its profound significance.
Mr. Aboul Gheit urged Minister Mondino to reconsider Argentina's recent orientations and positions, stressing the importance of revising them to avoid potential unfavourable reactions from the Arab world.
