The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, participated on 26 September in an informal interactive dialogue session between the members of the Security Council and the Troika of the Arab Summit at the ministerial level in New York, chaired by Her Excellency Ms. Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia. The session focused on the theme of "Cooperation between the Security Council and the League of Arab States."
During his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised that the Arab region stands at a critical juncture, and that the international community, particularly the Security Council, bears an immense responsibility to immediately halt Israel's campaign of killing and destruction. He further underscored the need for decisive international intervention to impose a just resolution based on the two-state solution and the well-established parameters agreed upon over thirty years ago.
The spokesman for the Secretary-General, Mr. Gamal Roshdy, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit, in his remarks, highlighted that the ongoing tragedy did not commence on 7 October, and that reverting to the status quo of 6 October would offer no solution nor ensure security and peace in the Arab region. He further noted that Israel continues to behave as though it is above international law and beyond the authority of the Security Council's resolutions.
Mr. Roshdy added that Mr. Aboul Gheit concluded his speech by stressing the imperative to demonstrate the courage to transition from mere dialogue about peace to its tangible implementation through the realisation of the two-state solution.
