The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul
Gheit, participated in the second day of the Future Summit held in New
York on 23 September. Mr. Aboul Gheit delivered a speech underscoring
the interconnected and multifaceted nature of the challenges we face
today. He emphasised that these global issues converge at a critical
juncture: the need to preserve multilateralism and strengthen collective
action on the international stage. Among the most pressing concerns he
highlighted were rising temperatures and climate change, the widening
gap between the developing world and wealthier nations—particularly in
relation to climate finance—and the equitable sharing of the burdens of
climate adaptation. Mr. Aboul Gheit also pointed to the persistent
crises of extreme poverty and mounting debt, as well as the serious
challenges posed by emerging technologies, especially artificial
intelligence.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that
Mr. Aboul Gheit, in his speech, stressed the growing recognition that
the current structure of the United Nations Security Council no longer
reflects the realities of the modern world. He argued that the Council,
as it stands, is not effectively fulfilling its mandate in addressing
contemporary conflicts. The continued Israeli aggression and crimes
against Gaza, which have persisted for months without a decisive
response from the Security Council, serve as a stark example. Even when
resolutions are passed, the Council has been unable to enforce them.
Roshdy added that Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the urgent need to
strengthen collaboration with the United Nations to address the root
causes of the current crises in the Arab region and beyond. He called
for a concerted effort to reshape the present reality, with the ultimate
goal of securing a better future for upcoming generations.
