Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, extended his condolences, both personally and on behalf of the members of the General Secretariat, for the passing of Dr. Nabil Elaraby, the distinguished Arab diplomat and former Secretary-General of the League, who departed on the afternoon of 26 August.
The Secretary-General regarded his late predecessor as one of the stalwart figures of Egyptian diplomacy and a significant asset in the realms of diplomatic practice and international law. In this regard, he reflected on the pivotal role Dr. Elaraby played in the quest to restore Egypt’s sovereignty over Taba through international arbitration. He further underscored the late diplomat’s commitment to the Palestinian cause, as well as his contributions to the United Nations and his service as a judge at the International Court of Justice, highlighting the extensive legacy he leaves behind.
The Secretary-General lamented the profound loss to Arab diplomacy that accompanies the passing of such a prominent figure, invoking the mercy of God for his soul and praying for patience and solace for his family and loved ones.
