The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States is closely monitoring the ongoing efforts and initiatives aimed at halting the war in Sudan, the last of which was the resumption of the Jeddah ceasefire talks in Geneva on 14 August. These efforts fall within the mandate entrusted to the League by its Council at various levels.
The General Secretariat views its participation in the Geneva discussions — the invitation to which is yet to be received —as a fulfillment of the obligations outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2736, dated 13 June 2024. The resolution's Paragraph 8 underscores the importance of "coordinated communication with the African Union, the League of Arab States, and other key regional actors to help promote peace in Sudan." This reflects the significant priority the League places on peace and security in Sudan, recognising its importance as an Arab nation and a vital bridge for Arab-African cooperation.
The General Secretariat reaffirms its commitment to the established Arab position on the situation in Sudan, emphasising the need for alignment between Arab, African, and international efforts to achieve peace in the country. This approach must be grounded in full respect for Sudan’s security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, the preservation of its national institutions —particularly the Sudanese Armed Forces —and the full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration signed on 11 May 2023.
