Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 4 August with Mr. Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, during his visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that the meeting included an in-depth discussion on the regional situation in light of the grave risks posed by the current Israeli escalation. They also explored ways to advance relations between the League of Arab States and Turkey on the political, economic, and other fronts during the next phase.
The spokesman noted that the meeting included an exchange of views on several important regional and international issues, most notably the developments of the Palestinian cause amid the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. The Secretary-General emphasised the need for the international community to protect the Palestinian people, especially the residents of Gaza who are suffering from ongoing massacres by Israeli forces. He called for an immediate ceasefire, urgent aid provision, and a reliable path towards implementing the two-state solution.
The Secretary-General warned against the region being dragged into a spiral of escalation and expressed his appreciation for Turkey's principled and decisive positions in supporting the Palestinian cause in international forums.
The two diplomats also discussed the latest developments in Syria, Libya, and Sudan.
