Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, took part in the inauguration of the preparatory Economic and Social Council meeting of the League Council at the summit level in its 33rd ordinary session, scheduled for Thursday, 16 May 2024, in Manama.
Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, highlighted that in his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised the challenging circumstances confronting the Arab nation, particularly the sustained aggression against Palestine over the past seven months. This aggression has led to significant economic and social ramifications and losses, necessitating urgent action from Arab and international leaders to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. He also commended the humanitarian aid efforts by Arab countries to Gaza, which, regrettably, continue to be obstructed and prevented by Israel, exacerbating the plight of the people in the Gaza Strip.
Ambassador Zaki noted that the meeting addressed several significant agenda items, with particular emphasis on the emergency response plan aimed at addressing the economic and social aftermath of the Israeli aggression against the State of Palestine, as well as urging countries, organisations, and development agencies to contribute to the financing and implementation of this plan. Additionally, the Council acknowledged the efforts to enhance the functionality of the Ministers Council on Cybersecurity. Discussions also centred on the advancements made in finalising the Greater Arab Free Trade Area and establishing the Arab Customs Union. Moreover, the Council issued a call to member states to support the League of Arab States' bid for observer status at the World Trade Organisation.
Ambassador Zaki highlighted that the Council endorsed several strategies, such as the Arab Strategy for Water Security in the Arab Region (2020-2030), aimed at addressing the challenges and future sustainability needs. Additionally, it adopted the Arab Strategy for Youth, Peace, and Security (2023-2028), along with the Arab Strategy for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Moreover, a coordination mechanism was established to link social development institutions and banks across Arab nations under the League of Arab States' auspices.
The Council engaged in productive discussions aimed at enhancing joint Arab Arab action and serving the interests of Arab peoples.
