The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States and the African Union Commission released a joint statement following the meeting between Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Chairman of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki at the General Secretariat of the League in Cairo on 15 October.
The joint statement read:
"The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States and the African Union Commission strongly call for an immediate cessation of military actions in Gaza and a coordinated international effort to provide urgent humanitarian aid and essential supplies to 2.2 million Palestinians.
These two regional organisations express profound concern over the directives compelling over a million Palestinians to evacuate their homes, which constitutes a clear violation of international law. Consequently, the two organisations urgently callupon the United Nations and the international community to take a resolute stance before it becomes too late to prevent an unfolding catastrophe.
The two organisations underscore the urgent necessity to avert further escalation, emphasising that an Israeli ground operation would undoubtedly result in a significant number of civilian casualties, including women and children, potentially leading to an unprecedented genocide.
The League of Arab States and the African Union implore the international community to uphold the fundamental principles of humanity and justice, stressing the immediate need for collective action to prevent a protracted assault on the Palestinian population.
Given the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the populace lacks access to drinking water and electricity, and the healthcare sector teeters on the brink of collapse, these two organisations stress the immediate requirement for a humanitarian corridor to deliver essential aid to the population and provide relief to the injured. They underscore that collective punishment is unacceptable.
Both the League of Arab States and the African Union reiterate that a political solution based on the two-state vision ultimately remains the sole guarantor of security and peace for all the people and nations in the region."
