Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated on 25 September in meetings held on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), focused on the situation in Sudan. The first meeting, addressing the humanitarian response in Sudan, was convened under the joint sponsorship of the United Nations, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, with the presence of Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hussein Awad.

In his statement, Ambassador Zaki stressed the urgent need for financial support to address the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan. He highlighted the escalating threats of famine, food insecurity, and shortages of life-saving medicines, underscoring the critical importance of funding immediate and short-term plans to supply essential food aid, restore livelihoods, and salvage the agricultural season.

Furthermore, the Assistant Secretary-General participated in a high-level meeting on supporting peace in Sudan, which saw wide participation from Arab and Western countries, as well as regional and international organisations concerned with Sudan's crisis. In the League of Arab States' statement, Ambassador Zaki highlighted the imperative of preserving Sudan’s state institutions. He emphasised that establishing mechanisms to monitor the ceasefire, protect Sudanese civilians, and prevent the flow of arms, in accordance with Security Council resolutions, is primarily a Sudanese responsibility.

Ambassador Zaki reiterated the League of Arab States' readiness to coordinate and collaborate on the most expedient and effective mechanisms to end the civil war, safeguard national institutions, and support the restoration of peace and security in Sudan.
